ENTERPRISING students at an Amersham school got a taste for business today after entering a competition to design a new sandwich for a national shop chain.

Teams of pupils from Dr Challoner's Grammar School competed against each other to design a new product for the Subway chain of sandwich shops.

The winning entry, designed by some of the school's Year Ten boys was a 'Best of British' combo of ham, sausage, mustard and lettuce on white bread.

Delighted winning team member Adam Hyett, 14, from Gerrards Cross, said: “I feel happy I helped design a sub that will be sold in Subway. I go there quite often and it will be quite cool to have one I helped design sold there.

“We had to think for quite a while to come up with an original idea. Eventually we decided on an English sub – there are American and Italian ones but I don't think there's been a British one.”

His team-mate, 14-year-old Peter Heath, said: “I’m excited for it to be in the shops, I’ll send all my friends and family there to bump the sales up a bit.”

The business studies students had to give presentations on their chosen designs and create a promotion campaign as part of a Global Enterprise Week challenge at the school.

The winning team used a photo of Winston Churchill to promote their product.

Peter Heath said: “We chose a picture of Churchill as our symbol because people in America and people over here know who he is and that he is a famous British person so he represents Britain.”

Tesh Patel, Development Agent for Subway in Buckinghamshire, judged the contest and said the pupils' efforts were “really impressive”.

He said: “I was really impressed with how quickly they thought up their ideas.

“They did all the things we do on a day-to-day basis like working out costs and profit margins. We could be bouncing ideas round for days and weeks and they have had an hour and a half to do it.”

The winning entry will be on sale at the Amersham and Beaconsfield branches of Subway on December 15.
