Hay blaze started by firework in St Albans

A STRAY firework destroyed more than 20 tonnes of hay in a field just outside St Albans on Saturday evening.

A stack of hay in a field off Highfield Lane, Tyttenhanger, was set ablaze at about 4.30pm, and was still smouldering 24 hours later.

St Albans firefighter Tony Bates said: “I don't think it was deliberate – I think a firework landed in there.

“There were 20 to 30 tonnes of hay, pretty much all destroyed.”

That's two huge haystacks set alight by "stray fireworks" in two weeks - first Sandridge, then Tyttenhanger.

Why do responsible farmers leave such tempting targets in their fields during the "stray firework" season? Are they mad or just over-insured?

Actually this was miles away from anywhere where people would have had fireworks. The village rumour mill has the name of a specific teenage boy who lit the fire and then rushed back down to the village to enjoy watching it. Having said that, you're right FatBob, the height of the stack made it a beacon to all but the most incurious. Farmers probably could do with a tutorial on human psychology before deciding on height, size and placement of bales of hay if they want to safeguard their property.
