Kings Langley councillors set off for twinning

Villagers and parish councillors from Kings Langley are to take a trip to France today, to sign a “friendship charter” with village Achiet-le-Grand and honour the efforts of war hero Christopher Cox.

Father-of-eight, Christopher Cox, acted as a stretcher bearer with the seventh Battalion of the Bedford Regiment during World War One. He took part in an attack on German defences south of the French village, rescuing a number of soldiers against a backdrop of bullets.

Councillor Alan Anderson said: “We are looking forward to signing the friendship charter with Achiet-le-Grand, but equally it will be a solemn occasion as it is Remembrance Day.

“It is wonderful that Kings Langley will be twinning with Achiet-le-Grand and I am really pleased that Ian Cox, son of war hero Christopher Cox, is coming with us.

“I am also delighted to hear that a number of villagers are making the trip as well, it is just a shame we couldn’t provide them with a bus for the journey.

“It will be a fantastic weekend and a fitting tribute.”

Three councillors will spend this weekend in Achiet-le-Grand, northern France, to sign the charter, in a bid to continue to nurture common community interests.

Twinning will also act as a permanent reminder of Mr Cox’s courageous actions and should help the two communities grow together, developing strong networks between local organisations.
