A MAN in his 50s was seriously injured by a van in a hit and run collision during a police pursuit in High Wycombe this afternoon.
It took place at about 3pm outside Marks and Spencer in Oxford Road.
The van was travelling towards West Wycombe and failed to stop at the scene of the collision. It was being pursued by a marked police car at the time of the incident.
Police believe two men were in the van, which drove off in the direction of Hughenden Avenue after hitting the man. It was later found abandoned in the Bellfield Road industrial estate.
The pedestrian is now said to be in a serious condition at Stoke Mandeville hospital.
The van is described as a white transit panel van, registration RY54 USN and, prior to the collision was seen in the Deeds Grove, High Wycombe. Police say the people inside are suspected of being involved in a crime in that area.
Ch Insp Colin Seaton, Wycombe’s deputy commander, added: “It is essential that anyone who might have seen this happen, or the men and the van being driven prior to and after the collision, comes forward."
The incident caused traffic chaos in town this afternoon and road closures remain in place in Oxford Road, while the police and collision investigators examine the scene.
Diversions are in place and these closures are expected to remain for a number of hours.
Anyone with information about the van, or who witnessed the collision, should contact High Wycombe police station on 0845 8 505 505, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
