A teenager tried to stop a mugger stealing his mobile phone robbed by poking him in the eye.
The 18-year-old was walking along Longmead Road, Epsom, at about 5.30pm, listening to music on headphones and using his mobile phone when a thug on a bike rode up to him, threatened him and demanded his phone.
He refused to give it away and they fell on the groud after starting a struggle.
The teenager poked the robber in the eye but he ran off with the phone, a black Nokia E63, and cycled away towards Chessington Road.
The 18-year-old was left with several grazes on his hands.
The robber was described as an olive-skinned man aged in his late teens, 5ft 9in tall and of medium build.
He had black hair with a hooped earring in both ears.
He was wearing a black baseball cap with the letters MYC on it in different, bright colours and also had on a black hooded top, dark jeans and black Nike trainers.
He was riding a dark red bike.
Detectives are now appealing for information on the robbery, which happened on Saturday.
Investigating Officer, Detective Constable Alison Ayre of Epsom CID, said: “Such street crimes in broad daylight are rare in Epsom but this was a disturbing experience for the victim.
“I am appealing to members of the community to think back to Saturday afternoon.
"Were you in the Longmead area? Longmead Road connects two main roads and there are shops and a railway station nearby and I am hoping someone will have seen something that could help my investigation.
"Perhaps you remember seeing a young man matching the suspects’ description on a bike or perhaps you may recognise him from his description?
"With your help I can trace and arrest the person responsible for this robbery.”
