REDBRIDGE: Council leaders agree to tax freeze 'in principle' under pressure from Lib Dems

COUNCIL tax could be frozen next year after the Tory administration agreed to the idea 'in principle' - under pressure from the Lib Dems.

Plans for a zero per cent tax rise for 2010 received the backing of members at a full council meeting last night (Thursday), after being proposed in an amendment by the Lib Dem leadership.

The Conservatives had agreed to back the idea as part of a deal struck with the Lib Dems during the council leadership crisis in May - when they needed their support to form a cabinet.

Council Tax was increased by 2.7 per cent in March, but Lib Dem councillors have called for the charge to be frozen next year in order to support hard up residents.

But doubts have been raised about the likelihood of the freeze actually going ahead, with Tory Monkhams Ward councillor Linda Huggett insisting that no firm decision will be made until details of the budget are discussed in November.

She said: "We've agreed to this in principle but we will have to see whether it will be possible when the budget round begins.

"It's premature to say that we could definitely do this at the moment.

"Obviously we would all like a tax freeze but it's dependent on the budget.

"The most important thing is that we maintain services."

Senior Lib Dem councillor Richard Hoskins has nevertheless welcomed the vote as a sign of his group's growing influence on the council.

He said: "We are punching above our weight at the moment, and having a real influence on the direction of the council.

"The recession has left lots of people in Redbridge pretty hard pressed, and we think it's time the council did something that could help ease the burden a little."

Are the LobDims going to insist in a nil increase in Kingston-upon-Thames too? That borough has London's highest tax, and is under LobDim control.

It is Lib Dem not Lob Dem. They used to be the SDP, Liberals and Whig Party as well. And I thought that you was a fountain of knowledge? I suppose you cannot know everything.

You can't even read! I wrote "LobDims" - deliberately, you clown.

Yes right you did. It is about time that you played the game without cards up your sleeves.

This is a particular issue here because of the way the Tories have pushed up our tax. Before they took control in 2002, Redbridge was a low tax Council, but over the past seven years our tax has overtaken and is now higher than in Camden, Islington, Ealing, Hackney, Southwark, Greenwich, Hounslow and Lewisham - and this year we almost caught up with Enfield. Now we find Redbridge in the top half of the London tax league table.

LibDem councillors proposed a tax freeze last year - a move made by nearly half the other councils in London - but our proposal was rejected on the grounds that Redbridge needed 2.5% to cover the staff pay rise. Now it looks like the pay rise will only be 1.25% which means that the previous Tory Council has pushed up the tax unnecessarily and local people are being overcharged.

The good news is that as soon as they lost control in the spring, the new leadership was willing to agree the LibDem proposal to work for a tax freeze for 2010/11.

Ian why don't you tell the whole story? You make all the comments about other boroughs, and where Redbridge is in some "league table". You try to claim credit for your party for bringing the prospect of a nil rise next year. Does your party also take the credit for Kingston-upon-Thames having the highest tax in London - top of that "league table" - and where your party has an overall majority?

I think that's dodging the issue, Morris - you might just as well ask the Redbridge Tories to take responsibility for Havering or Labour for Haringey - both Councils with a very high tax. The point I am making is that, here in Redbridge, millions have been wasted on various major projects whilst the tax has been rising faster than most other places (4th highest inc out of 33 Boroughs since the last elections).

I wouldn't disagree with you on one point - Vanity Square, Redbridge-i and Redbridge Lies, for example.
