A disputed fence at Kenley Aerodrome which cost the Ministry of Defence £113,000 could cost taxpayers the same amount.

According to the council’s draft statement of accounts for 2008-2009 the MoD is pursuing Croydon Council for the cost of erecting the fence around the airfield.

Neighbours and users of the field protested about its intrusion on the surrounding area and it was never built.

The fence has sat at the airfield ever since.

A Croydon Council spokeswoman said: “The council’s statement of accounts 2008-09 recognises, as they are required to, a possible liability in relation to a compensation claim by the MoD for fencing materials purchased for the perimeter of Kenley Airfield, before permitted development rights were removed.

“The council believes it acted in the public’s best interest in removing permitted development rights and safeguarding the open character and appearance of the Conservation Area and Green Belt.

“It would be premature to speculate at this point if any payment will be made to the MoD as ongoing negotiations continue in finding a solution on this site.”
