ANOTHER lift on the Orchard Estate has been reported faulty - just days after the tragic death of a grandmother-of-seven.

Footage shot by ITN news yesterday shows the doors of an elevator in another block jamming before they had fully opened - despite council assurances that all other lifts are working normally.

The broadcast, by ITV's London Tonight programme, comes after grandmother Christine Allen, 50, died after being crushed in a lift on Saturday on the eighth floor of the Lambourne Court tower block.

The charity worker from Leytonstone had been visiting her daughter and three of her seven grandchildren at the Woodford Green estate.

After only a short joint statement from Redbridge Council and Redbridge Homes, who manage the estate, council leader Keith Prince has spoken of the incident.

He said:"I am extremely saddened by this tragic death and my thoughts go out to the family at this difficult time.

“I am as concerned about the incident as the residents on the Orchard Estate and would like to reassure residents that the Council is working closely with Redbridge Homes, the police and the Health and Safety Executive to find out exactly how this happened.

“I understand that residents are concerned about the safety of lifts and that is why all of the lifts on the Orchard Estate will undergo a precautionary service this week.

“All residents in Lambourne Court have received letters from Redbridge Homes explaining that an incident took place and offering them a phone number to call for further help and support.

“It is unwise for us to speculate at the moment as to how this tragic incident occurred and I am sure that people understand we are unable to comment on specific details while there are ongoing police and Health and Safety Executive investigations .

“But once we are in a position to give more details we will of course do this as soon as possible."
