The new honorary colonel of the 135 Independent Geographic Squadron, Royal Engineers, paid her first official visit to the squadron last week.
Dr Vanessa Lawrence, director general and chief executive of Ordnance Survey called into the Territorial Army centre in Ewell to be shown around and to meet the personnel.
As honorary colonel Dr Lawrence will support and visit the squadron during its training and at military functions.
She will be travelling to Germany to see the group training during their annual camp in September.
During the evening Dr Lawrence met Sergeant Baz Barrett, 30, a musician who has just returned from Afghanistan.
During his time there he worked as chief theatre map technician in the mapping department, supplying maps, advice and expertise to all the troops on the ground.
