FREEMASONS in Buckinghamshire have launched a new community support project they hope will become an annual event.

They say the move comes in light of the effect the recession is having on charities Ray Reed, head of Bucks Freemasons, said: “Companies have cut back in their charitable giving. Individuals and families are also facing difficulties as the credit crunch bites.

"Freemasons have traditionally concentrated on fundraising, but the current downturn is making them re-evaluate our approach, and consider devoting time as well as money to good causes through Freemasonry in the Community Week.”

He said the initiative, which was held from June 20 – 27, came about after the organisation's charitable wing found itself receiving more and more requests for donations.

He added the event also aimed to recruit more members into the organisation.

Mr Reed said: "Freemasonry is unique in raising the majority of its charitable funds from its members. Our aim therefore is to attract more members into our fraternity.”
