A SCENIC park has been handed over to Redbridge Council from a private developer after months of legal wrangling.

Claybury Park, off Roding Lane North in Woodford Bridge, was given to the authority by Crest Nicholson Plc as part of the company's development of an area of Repton Park.

The 70-hectar space, which is thought to be the largest new park created in London for over a century, has been informally managed by the council since 2006, although was never officially transferred over until this week.

The council says it plans "future development work" at the site, including a new play area.

A council spokeswoman said: "The park will be maintained by the council for the benefit of residents and will create a legacy for future generations.

"Heritage Lottery funding for improvements to the ancient woodland, which took place in 2006 and was funded by the Council, will also now be unlocked.

"The historic area comprises of ancient and woodland, orchard, grassland and ponds. These provide a wide range of habitats for wildlife such as Tawny Owls and Woodpeckers. It is also host to rich flora and fauna, including several rare or regionally uncommon species.

"Claybury Woods were formerly part of Hainault Forest, and in earlier times part of the Great Royal Forest of Waltham. The woods are classified by English Nature as ancient woodland, having been in existence prior to 1600 AD."

The official opening of the park is planned for later this year.
