A NEW radio station for the Asian community is coming to High Wycombe, it was announced today.

Ofcom today announced it was granting a community radio licence to Awaaz Radio.

It is provided “on a not-for-profit basis focusing on the delivery of specific social benefits to enrich a particular geographical community or a community of interest”.

Yet no decision has been taken by the regulator on the future of a commercial licence handed back by Mix 107 on July 1.

The popular station closed as it struggled to contain debts.

Awaaz Radio will have a broadcast radius of 5km, about three miles, which will cover most of the town.

It will broadcast from a premises run by broadcast firm Arqiva in Telford Way, Downley.

It was unavailable for comment today. No start date has been given but it must start broadcasting within two years. The licence will run for five years.

No other applications were made for the licence.

A statement from Ofcom says: “Awaaz Radio aims to encourage, promote, and develop a sense of community among the Asian community in the High Wycombe area in Buckinghamshire with programming that will include music and the provision of news, information and entertainment.

“Awaaz Radio aims to become a hub for community interaction and awareness. It will assist people in obtaining access to facilities in training and health, and will promote education on social issues.”
