A MARKET stall selling fabrics showed they were winning material at the Retailer of the Year awards evening.

Stanley Green's Fabrics rolled up to the event last night at the Alban Arena and walked away winners of the Market Traders category, sponsored by St Albans Civic Society.

There were numerous nominations in the category, but there could only be one winner on the night.

The judges got into a spin when choosing five finalists from the impressive entries.

And after much deliberation those shortlisted were last year's winners Grove Fruits, Sycamore Health Food and Nuts, Russell Crombie's Records, The Cheesewheeler and Stanley Green's Fabrics.

But it was the latter that really caught the eye of the panel.

Stanley said: "Last year I was on the shortlist - I keep saying to my customers not to vote for me and they won't listen.

"They have gone and done it now - I have got this plaque and I don't know what to do with it.

"It's a nice gesture and I do feel honoured to think that my customers think so highly of me to vote for me.

"The awards are such a nice idea; it's a good get together, people get to know you and know who you are - I'm all for it.

"It's a nice way of expressing how you feel about the town."

The award was presented to Stanley Green by Eric Roberts, member of the Civic Society.
