An aspiring neuroscientist with a place at a top university appeared in the Miss London beauty pageant last week to challenge the stereotype such contests are only for “blonde bimbos”.
Streatham Park resident, Sophia Fitzgerald-Smith, 17, who said she wanted to change perceptions of what beauty is, has been offered only one of 20 spots at University College London to study neuroscience next year.
The straight A, Graveney School pupil, said: “I wanted to see how well I could do. I’m not blonde, i’m not the typical type of person to enter a pageant like this.”
The Penwortham Road resident wowed the judges to grab a top 10 spot, but she did not do enough to make it through to the Miss UK championships.
While she vowed to return next year, she also admitted not all the contestants were the stereotype she first imagined.
