AN EXHIBITION has gone on display showing King Henry VIII’s legacy on a borough.
The Greenwich Heritage Centre, at the Royal Arsenal, Woolwich, commemorates the 500th anniversary of Henry’s accession to the throne.
Its free photographic displays show how many of Greenwich’s famous landmarks date from the Tudor king’s time and how his reign shaped the future of the borough.
The centre’s education officer Frances Ward said: “Woolwich Dockyard was founded in 1512 for the building of the King’s great wooden ship, The Great Harry, and by 1600 you had an infant arsenal in Woolwich.
“You could also say that Greenwich was Henry’s fabulous sports and leisure complex. That’s how we’d describe it today.
“He had his tilt-yard there for jousting, as well as bear-baiting, cock-fighting, tennis and bowling.”
Henry VIII: The Birth of Modern Greenwich is open from 9am until 5pm Tuesdays to Saturdays.
