Hampton School has been shut for a week after a first year pupil was diagnosed with flu.

The child’s infection has not yet been confirmed as swine flu, but further tests are being carried out.

A message on the Hanworth Road school’s website from its acting headteacher posted yesterday evening explained the child was recovering at home and receiving treatment.

The message continued that following advice from the Health Protection Agency (HPA) it will be closed for seven days until next Monday in a bid to limit the spread of any infection.

Examinations due to be taken by some pupils this week will take place as planned during the closure.

However, children showing flu-like symptoms should not take the exams – and pupils are being advised to return home immediately after the exam ends.

The HPA is also recommending that antiviral treatment – Tamiflu – be given to all children in the first year, all staff who had significant contact the ill pupil.

The medication is also being advised for children who shared the same school coach journey including girls from The Lady Eleanor Holles School in Hampton.

Staff at Lady Eleanor Holles School were advising pupils the school would remain open buy anyone who had travelled on the same Cobham school coach while he was showing symptoms will be offered Tamiflu as a precaution.

Denmead School a prep school in Gloucester Road which acts as a ‘feeder school’ for Hampton School will be open as usual.

Pupils and staff who develop flu-like symptoms such as a temperature, headache, cough and sore throat are advised to call their GP or NHS Direct.

A concert due to feature the school's jazz band this weekend has also been cancelled Garrick's Temple to Shakespeare, the monument to the playwright on the riverside at Hampton, was set to host the concert on Saturday, May 16, at 2pm.

A spokesman from the organisers said it was hoped it could be rearranged.
