Public turn out for traditional High Wycombe mayor making ceremony

Outgoing Mayor Paul Lambourne is weighed out Outgoing Mayor Paul Lambourne is weighed out

THERE were boos and cheers in High Wycombe town centre today as councillors and public officials took part in the traditional mayor making ceremony.

Six were booed for putting on weight during the last year at the Frogmoor weighing ceremony, first held up in the 17th century to root out those dining at taxpayers’ expense.

And the town crier – who led the cheers and boos with cries of “no more” and “some more” – was himself was found to put on weight.

Most escaped the boos when taking to the seated scales.

These included outgoing Wycombe District Council mayor Councillor Paul Lambourne, authority chief executive Karen Satterford, leader Lesley Clarke and Thames Valley Police deputy Wycombe commander Chief Inspector Stuart Craik.

Yet honorary burgess Ron Gaffney and charter trustees Mohammad Yasin, Trevor Snaith, Valerie Razzaq, Arif Hussain and Joel Foley were booed for piling on the pounds.

And there were laughs as town crier Jon Taylor was found to be heavier than last year.

Earlier Councillor Julie Pritchard was sworn in as this year’s Mayor of High Wycombe, a ceremonial role. Muhammad Abdul-Karim will be her deputy.

Liverpool born Councillor Pritchard, a Conservative, told the Guildhall she was “intrigued” by the unique ceremony when she moved to the town 18 years ago.

She said: “Little did I knew that in the not too distant future I myself would be taking part in this public event.

“Far from feeling some curiosity and fear I had all those years ago at the idea of a public weighing-in, I cannot find words to express the pride I feel today of being offered the honour of being in this office.”

Daughter Alex, 22, will be her consort. Cllr Pritchard said: “She’s been my rock and my mainstay in the last year and I know her support will continue during the next.”

Cllr Lambourne said: “It has been a great honour and privilege to be able to represent the town of High Wycombe as town mayor.”

He said: “It has been a wonderful experience, an experience we will remember for many years to come.”

At the Mayor’s reception later in the day Cllr Lambourne honoured “unsung heroes” from the voluntary sector and talented young people he had met during his 255 engagements in the last year.

And he announced his Mayor’s Appeal had raised at least £17,500 for South Bucks Hospice.

Cllr Lambourne also paid tribute to council Labour leader Glyn Galbraith, who died in February, and honorary burgess David Fieldhouse, who died in March.

Cllr Pritchard announced her appeal would be split between the Thames Valley & Chiltern Air Ambulance Trust and The Royal Masonic Trust for Girls and Boys.

This works to tackle poverty and improve education for all families, regardless of their Masonic connections, she said.

The Chilterns Shopping Centre manager Bill Pollard was made an honorary burgess at the reception. The honour is given to persons of merit and were formerly freedoms of the town.

The Royal Masonic Trust for Girls & Boys???

For all families, regardless of their Masonic connections??

Not quite so clear according to their own mission statement!

MISSION STATEMENT
To continue to relieve poverty and provide an education and preparation for life for the children of the family of a Freemason and, where funds permit, for any children, as their fathers would have done had they been able so to do.

Is this appropriate when funds raised by Wycombe folk will only reach the masses once the freemasons have had their share?

Interested to know what everyone else thinks?

Maybe we are not weighing the right people.

Next year. If the weight is more than the original 'weigh-in', the fountain turns on!

What utter rubbish in the name of tradition. I see the same dignitaries have boarded up the Holywell Mead Pool. Their time could be better spent than showing off their robes and weight. How pathetic.

Let's face it the Freemasons is a secret society. What is the council doing being involved with this group who are there to help out their mates?

I think its disgusting that money will be paid to a "secret society" to help Freemason children when there are charities in Buckinghamshire desperate for funding to help young & old from all walks of life.

The Masons are not a secret society, if they are so secret how come they have a website that you can access? The fund for girls and boys donates to any cause not juat masonic, Bucks Masons have donated monies to various local charities eg. Child Breavment Charity and Riding for the Disabled. The new Mayor is not a Mason, as Masons are still men only.

The reason for Frogmoor, is that the crowd cannot be accommated in the market place whilst there is a market. This also also allows the new Mayor to have a procession, as the first procession from the Mayor's Parlour to the Guild Hall is for the outgoing Mayor.

Cant accommodate the crowd because of the market. From what I have seen lately you could hold a football match in the high st on market day

Yes it is clear they donate to various charities but their mission statement makes it perfectly clear that this only happens if there is no freemasons in need of help!

Surely it would have been more acceptable for the mayor to make the Child Bereavement Charity or Riding for the Disabled her chosen charity and cut out the freemasons.
That way it would be clear where the money would go to.

aug69, there could of not been enough for the weighing to take place in the market palce on saturday as firstly, there needs to be enough room for the 55, take or give a little, who were weighed to be held and also enough room for the public the weighing attracts to be stood.

yog, I cannot not comment on that as I got that information from my father, as he is himself a Mason, and he is currently not here for me to get an answer from.

I think the residents of Wycombe who help to raise money every year for the mayors appeal have a right to know where the money is going.

It is clear that there is a discrepancy in what Cllr Pritchard told the BFP and what the charity itself says in its mission statement. This needs to be cleared up.

I know of at least two Charter Trustees who are not happy about money going to the Masons. Cllr Pritchard has been poorly advised

What a pathetic statement that is.

Everyone willing to raise money for a charity deserves credit. Not every charity helps everyone, thats always going to be the case.

'Yog' would only be happy if it were raising money for Ryemead Pool, but even that would only benefit some people.

My understanding is that the Mayor raises money for a number of charities throughout the year. This is just one of them.

So here's an idea Yog, get off her back and start getting behind this town for once.

Most charities do not discriminate against those who are not Freemasons!

I have never had cause to question the choice of charity until now.
If save Wycombe is right and even some of the charter trustees are not happy with the choice then I think there needs to be a rethink.

You can throw insults all you like but until it is clarified exactly where the money is going to go to then questions will be rightly asked.

Ive concern over Cllr Pritchards choice of a masonic charity.
I work with many local organisations groups and charities and havnt come across any local work that the Masonic charity has done
Perhaps they can advise what they spent last year locally and how local people benefited

This is straight from the Mason's website & answers the above questions:

Buckinghamshire Provincial Grand Lodge
The Royal Masonic Trust for Girls and Boys
In 1982 the Royal Masonic Institution for Girls (formed in 1788) and the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys (formed in 1798) were combined to form the MasonicTrust for Girls and Boys to continue nearly two hundred years of care for the children of poor families. On 1 May 2003, the Trust became the Royal Masonic Trust for Girls and Boys.

The prime object of the Trust is support for the children of distressed or deceased Freemasons, the aim being to give them the start in life they would have received had distress not befallen their families. The second objective is to provide help to children not connected to Masonic families and to support charities connected with children.

I have never heard of this charity - surely there are more local ones that could benefit!

And reading subsequent comments about the work of this organisation, I think we are right to be concerned.

Not only was Cllr Pritchard's choice of charity ill advised I think her appointment as mayor represents extremely poor judgement.
She has only served for two years as a district councillor for Micklefield and during that time has done precious little for the people of Micklefield.
The role of Mayor should be given to a long standing councillor who has earned the right to receive this honour through service to the people of Wycombe.
This appointment makes the whole debacle of the town and charter trustees even less credible than ever.

T Wycombe Marsh Rebel. The Masonic website is differenct to the Masonic girls and boys website. That states that at present only bursaries for choristers are given. apart from that it is all in house. thsi charity will NOT be of benefit for the people of Wycombe unless they are Freemasons. It is absolutely disgusting to choose a charity such as this.
