WANSTEAD: By-election victory for Tories, big gain for Lib Dems

CONSERVATIVE Alex Wilson has won the Wanstead by-election - but the Lib Dems are also celebrating a huge gain in the ward.

Mr Wilson, who now will become the area's new councillor, got 1,300 votes, with Lib Dem nominee Kate Garrett close behind on 1,030.

Meanwhile Labour slipped from second to third in the ward, with candidate Ross Hatfull managing 694 votes.

During a tense count at Ilford Town Hall, election officials had to recount several bundles of voting papers when they realised the votes did not add up, and there were widespread fears a full recount would have to be held.

In the last elections in Wanstead ward, during the 2006 local government elections, the Lib Dems got 14 per cent of the vote. This time they got 30 per cent. The Conservatives slipped from 48 per cent to 37 per cent, while the Greens and Labour also suffered losses.

Nevertheless the Tory Party's margin of victory was still relatively comfortable.

The first act of Mr Wilson after the result was announced was to pay tribute to his Tory predecessor Allan Burgess, whose death earlier this year forced the by-election.

He said: "It's a huge honour to follow in Allan Burgess's footsteps.

"I know how hard he worked for the ward and how well regarded he was, and I look forward to following in his work."

Mr Wilson admitted he had been "very nervous" during the count, when it became apparent the vote would not be the easy victory for the Conservatives many predicted.

He said: "We always knew the Lib Dems were a threat.

He added: "It is also a damning indictment of Gordon Brown's government for Labour to come in third place."

Mr Wilson thanked everyone who voted for him, but pledged to do the best he could for all of the ward's population.

"Wanstead is a very special place and I want it to carry on being that way.

"I'm looking forward to playing my part in the administration of the council, which is a successful one."

Amid accusations of fierce in-fighting in Redbridge's Tory group, Mr Wilson said: "I think it's healthy to have a degree of internal discussions within political organisations but what we need to remember is what holds us together as Conservatives is more than what sets us apart."

Kate Garrett, of the Liberal Democrats, said she wanted to build on her party's gains, with the goal of winning Wanstead's vote next time.

She added: "We've always been told we'd never get anywhere in Wanstead but tonight's election proves that is wrong.

"I will definitely stand again next election. The Conservatives have been given a bit of a scare tonight."

The turnout was 40.7 per cent.

In fourth place was Ashley Gunstock for the Green Party on 256 votes.

Fifth was the BNP's candidate, John Evans, who got 171 votes.

In last place was UKIP's Nick Jones on 33.

Congratulations to Kate for an outstanding result, particularly so given the sad circumstances that led to the vacancy. Across Redbridge it is increasingly clear that people can see that the Council's Conservative administration, riven by infighting and hit by one investigation after another, is failing the Borough badly, which residents are paying for after some of the highest Council Tax increases in London.

Maybe there is something wrong with my calculator but it looks like the British Nasty Party managed less than 5% of the vote. Hardly the result they were predicting and not quite enough to form a government if reflected at a general election either. Poor old k.hunt and her pals, they couldn't even find enough drunken idiots to vote for them on St George's Day. Ain't democracy wonderful?

Ross Hatfull's sad tally of 694 votes shows how fed up people are with the Labour Party. The BNP's 171 is a poor showing for any political party, though it does equal one vote to every four Labour ones, which is worth thinking about.

I agree he didn't win a hat-full of votes but local council by-elections are hardly ever an indicator of what will happen at a general election. They tend to be decided on local issues and they are always a good opportunity to give the government, whoever happens to be in power, a bloody nose. Allan Burgess was a well respected local councillor for two decades so it was no great surprise that the Cons held the seat, but more alarming for them than the BNP winning 1 in 4 of the Labour vote is the fact that the LibDems did so well in a traditionally strong Tory ward. Maybe the old Etonian would be PM will realise that it wasn't such a wise move claiming to be the Heir to Blair after all. So much for the benefits of a public school education. The NuTories don't really offer anything radically different to NuLabour so don't go pinning your hopes on an absolute majority at the next election. However, the real winner was democracy which proved that when it comes to the crunch the vast majority of voters reject extremist hate parties.

Yes I'd agree that national issues play a role in local elections, and it's true that the Tories are relatively high in the national opinion polls.

But I don't detect any real strength in Tory support right now - there's just a general view that the Government isn't succeeding plus a vague sense that Cameron may seem like quite a nice chap.

The irony is that the policies that created or exacerbated the financial crisis - liberalisation, deregulation, privatisation, cosying up to big business, encouraging more and more people to take on the risk of home ownership - are all at heart Conservative policies, if ones pursued in the UK at least by a supposedly left of centre Government.

Quite why anyone would conclude that replacing 'fake Tories' with 'real Tories' would leave the economy any better off is a mystery to me. This is why, I think, the Conservatives are floundering around attacking Brown without anything specific of substance to propose as their own economic policy - and also why, deep down, many people are probably uneasy about putting the Tories back into power - had they won under Hague, Duncan-Smith or Howard things would now be even worse....

PMSWL? You should go see a doctor with that incontinence problem you admit to. Extremist parties like the BNP always get a small boost during an economic downturn, but you are no threat to the status quo of the two party system so dream on. Oh, the security word was bird-drug. Ever get the feeling it just ain't your day Perry?

I shouldn't take too much notice of this sore larry character, the real extremist parties are the ones that takes us into illegal wars killing thousands of men women and children then allows in immigrants that attempted to blow up trains in london!!! ring a bell??? maybe not!!!!

There may well be a two party system operating in this country but the smaller party's can force through changes just by having an increased support throughout the country.

Let's hope the bnp can make some inroads on June4th in the European Elections - forget ukip - go for the real deal!!!!

Watch out for people from the BNP being arrested, not being charged like the activist in Wansted,or bailed until after June 4th. The media report it, and then, nothing. It's the jolly old Red brigade. You know, the thugs who beat up members of the BNP including elderly canvassers, because they are just becoming aware that they have lost the argument and they are resorting to violence. They call the BNP violent thugs without any evidence to support it. This intimidation will get worse you wait and see.

See, this is how truly delusional you lot are. You see Marxists everywhere. I'm not one, far from it, but don't let that fact get in the way of your fiction and conspiracy theories. What you don't seem to understand is that us lot in the East End have a proud track record of seeing off fascists and we will see the BNP off too. You are just a minor annoyance, not a political movement so don't kid yourself about your importance or influence. And by the way, learn to spell.

Larry is soo typical of the marxist moron... he cannot handle a little bit of competition about why the B.N.P. are becoming so popular, and so resorts to his tuff guy statements about 'chasing people off' ...then he goes onto spelling and grammar mistakes - yawn!! the moron hasn't a clue about politics, no wonder the B.N.P. are becoming so popular with opposition like larry-boi crumbling after 24hrs!! yer big Num-nuts!! rofl!!

As they are so popular and you are so clued up, maybe you can let us all know when the BNP will be forming a government or even taking control of a council.
Should we bother waiting up for an answer? Table top sales? Sounds about as much of a threat as the provisional wing of the WI. Like I said earlier, come back in June and let's see how successful you have been.

scoffer says...
9:29pm Sat 25 Apr 09

You are a total thicko... the table-top sales was mentioned to prove to you that marxist thugs like you are NOT 'seeing off' anyone, anywhere... as mentioned earlier by someone on here no one gave the B.N.P. a chance in the G.L.A. elections, but they were elected against all the odds... the same will happen in June against all the odds as well... BTW which political party do you support ? or perhaps the defunct communist has lost whatever support it ever had as people eventually woke up and realised that idiots like you were in that party... the rest of your bile makes no sense - go and get a life.

Thousands of immigrants are pouring into France (in all the newspapers) "fleeing persecution" ???? One would have thought that France was a nice safe country (haven)to claim political asylum(bogus of course, just economic migrants) No,they want to come to England but we are full up with over two million out of work????

It seems that GB gives them cash hand outs straight away while the French make them wait 6months.

Ive yet to speak to any man or woman who actually agrees we should take more and more immigrants in to England simply because we do not have the room anymore.

Our children are struggling to find work, places to rent or buy,and yet more and more immigrants keep arriving in a never ending cycle of increased population drive????? No one is listening to us the public anymore and the situation is getting worse in this country especially when you read of the scandal of MPs tax fiddles and expenses fiddles let's hope the bnp do well in the European elections and forget ukip!!!!!

Hmmmm, an interesting comments section. Sorry Scoffer, I’m no lefty and I’m no BNP supporter either, but I have to agree with Larry. You had a poor result here and I think deep down you were hoping for better. We'll all be waiting in June, but I can’t see you making serious headway into Europe or a General Election. Lets not forget though, you have your value; you act more of a warning siren for the major parties, who then act (or they should if they are shrewd) on the publics signals. This is exactly why the Labour party are heading for the exits, they don’t listen. Nothing wrong with you lot having a dream though (dream and reality are two different things)
