By day Tony Power is a rehabilitation support worker and by night he is rehabilitating the faded career of a former British pop idol.

The amateur songwriter from Hackbridge is behind an unlikely commercial comeback next month by the flame-haired singer Sonia.

Sonia, 37, reached number one in 1989 with You’ll Never Stop me Loving You before representing the UK in the Eurovision song contest.

After a 14-year absence from the charts, she is releasing a 20th anniversary single, Fool for Love, which was penned by Mr Power.

He said: “Last year I contacted Sonia and her agent through the MySpace website, with a ‘nothing ventured, nothing gained’ attitude.

“I told her that I had a track that I felt might suit her style of music. She listened to it and agreed, so I asked her to record the song for me. She was lovely to work with.

“Several mixes and recordings later, the track is ready to be released on May 25 this year, to celebrate 20 years in the music industry for Sonia and also since her first number one single.”

The diminutive Liverpudlian became the first British woman to have five top 20 hits with singles taken from a debut album. However, her career began to slide after she left record producers Stock, Aitken and Waterman because of “creative tensions”.

In 2003 she took part in the reality TV show Reborn in the USA but was voted off in the fifth week.

Fool for Love is being released by Energise Records and will also appear on a compilation album, written by Mr Power and featuring several divas from the 1980s.
