Gang fight at Sainsbury's Tooting

A massive fight broke out in Tooting Broadway last night between two rival gangs of armed yobs.

Shoppers ran for their lives as 30 youths aged 14-20 attacked each other with wood, iron bars and bottles in Sainsbury’s car park at around 6pm.

It began in Mitcham Road outside McDonald’s, where a group of what are believed to be Somali youths began taunting some Asians, according to one witness.

The teenagers, some of whom had their faces covered with headscarves, chased each other down an alleyway and into the car park, witnesses said.

Mark Shaw, 46, frontman of 80s band Then Jerico, was caught in the chaos while carrying his shopping to the car.

He said: “They picked up sticks and anything they could find. There were people screaming and shouting.

"It was like a war zone. We were absolutely terrified.

“It makes me feel angry and disgusted with the Government because this country is being over-run by little scumbags.”

Within minutes, three police cars arrived but the youths bolted and it is not yet known whether any were arrested.

Rob Sanson, manager of A Bar 2 Far, witnessed part of the fight but said it was no different to normal.

He said: “There’s always antisocial behaviour, throwing bottles, smoking weed, selling drugs and everything.

“We are trying to run a clean business but we are being sidetracked by them. They are putting off our customers.”

Several months ago McDonalds employed a security guard to stop troublesome teens congregating there, but locals say the gangs just moved onto the streets.

In April, Mr Shaw, who has lived in Graveney for ten years, was badly beaten up by a gang further down the same road.

Police were already conducting a stop and search operation at Tooting Broadway and officers were on the scene within minutes.

One youth sustained minor injuries, and officers are studying CCTV footage to identify suspects.

Inspector Dale Anderton from Tooting safer neighbourhoods team (SNT), said: “It was an isolated incident.

"It seems that a group of up to 20 people attended the area intent on exacting some sort of revenge for a minor assault on a youth earlier in the week.

“They then met up with another group of about 20 and a fight broke out.”

He added behaviour in the area had improved recently, but that officers were increasing their patrols to tackle the remaining problems.

Its disgusting the way we put up with this type of behaviour.
I for one cant wait to leave the UK. A country my father & grandfather fought in 2 wars to protect my rioght to live in, without fear or opression. Sadly both are very prevalent, not due to invading armed forces, but due to the behaviour of the gangs of youths on our streets! When will the UK be a country to be proud of again? Sadly, the answer I believe is Never!

When I left Tooting Broadway tube station last night there were at least six police officers and one sniffer dog. This was at 17:35 surely they would have heard this commotion going on literally around the corner?

Get the scum off our streets - curfews are needed for these gangs

Ah, the joys of multiculturism. The sooner the Brits get our country back the better.

I find some of the comments here a little rash. We all know it's a minority of kids who are causing the trouble, and they could just as well be white, black or whatever else. Teenage boys are the same in every culture, there are plenty of "British" gangs out there too. They like causing trouble and it shouldn't be tolerated, but it's no reason to demonise others who have done nothing wrong.

Most of the anti-social activity in Britain today is due in part to an imported population and the dire and repugnant influence they have on the younger generation here, my parents say this problem never used to be as bad as this, the problem really kicked off with the increased immigration of foreigners within the last 30 years and Labor is clueless to interpret how to deal with this situation.

Notice that the people who say they might leave the UK don't care to suggest what paradise islands there might be out there that they honestly think would be any better.

Dear Fred1,

I think you will find most of us who are being forced to leave, will go somewhere where immigration is strictly controlled. We will ensure our paperwork is up to date & correct, we will ensure we have skills to take with us, so we an support ourselves & we will ensure we behave in a manner that will enrich the country we go to. Does that answer your question!

I lived in Tooting all my life - in fact generations of my family did also. I was born above the furniture shop which was there before Halfords (giving my age away) on the corner of Tooting High Street and Garrett Terrace.

I watched Tooting get more and more out of control to the point that each day when I went out, I wondered how many more police incident boards I would see.

It was normal to be abused walking in the street for no reason, seeing fights, muggings, and terrible anti social behaviour.

I could take no more of what Tooting has turned into and moved away. I live now in a place where it is the norm to be proud to be British and a place where the type of behaviour I saw each day on the streets of Tooting would not be tollerated.

There are parts of England where the present attitude of some of the residents of Tooting is not the norm.

I just feel sorry for the normal, decent people of Tooting who have to tollerate this behaviour.
