Chimney fire covers Brighton streets with smoke

First published in News by

A network of streets was swathed in smoke when a chimney caught fire early this morning.

Thick black smoke spread from a house in Ditchling Rise, Brighton, at about 2am.

A young couple had been burning wood in the fireplace of their basement flat, which had set fire to the chimney flue further up.

Firefighters said the smoke could be smelled as far away as Preston Circus.

They used an extendable ladder to pour water slowly down the chimney to douse the blaze.

Crew manager Ben Nelson of Preston Circus fire station said people who use their fireplaces should have their chimneys swept twice a year to prevent fires.

I was on the edge of my seat wanting to know what speed the water was poured down the chimney.

Luckily, Ben Parsons has quenched my thirst for knowledge by informing me

"They used an extendable ladder to pour water SLOWLY down the chimney to douse the blaze"

....amazing. But Ben.... What colour was this extendable ladder?

I would have thought a bucket would have been far more suitable for pouring water down a chimney than a ladder. Surely it is very awkward to keep the water on the ladder whilst trying to tip it up... and an extendable ladder at that.

Perhaps more people should have real fire then we could create loads of jobs as chimney sweeps. Just what we need. Get the council on to this immediately.

If people don't like The Argus or their reporters why bother to read it - go and do an internet search and find the whingers and moaners forum site, then you can complain because no one uses it. Having said that you do sometimes give the rest of us a laff.
Better still Newsquest Media should rename as I also see some of there other papers are also full of whingers and moaners.
OH NO, I'm turning into a whinger and moaner!! That smoke must be going to my head.
