A SIX-YEAR-OLD boy is recovering in Great Ormond Street Hosptial after having a bone marrow transplant.

Drew James, of Claremont Road, Hextable, received his transplant at the hospital in London on February 5 after battling with acute myeloid leukaemia since May 2007.

His mum Debbie said the transplant went well but now Drew faces a tough time ahead.

The 40-year-old said: “The transplant went very well but at the moment he is reaping the effects of the chemotherapy.”

Debbie said the last few days have been okay but last week Drew was suffering from mouth ulcers and a sore stomach.

She said this is because all of his stomach lining has been stripped due to the treatment.

All of Drew’s symptoms are normal and the doctors are happy with how everything has gone so far.

Over the next couple of weeks Drew’s white and red blood cells will start to increase.

His mum added: “He still has a rocky path to get through but I hope it is not too rocky. I hope it is a bit kind to him.

“He has been a real little superstar and he has coped with it as best he can.”
