BLACKHEATH: A2 roadworks to cause diversions for eight weeks

ROADWORKS on the A2 between Blackheath Hill and Shooters Hill will cause traffic diversions for eight weeks.

From February 15 Transport for London (TfL) will be reconstructing the carriageway, installing new street lighting and creating a footpath and cycle path on the 1.1km stretch of road running through Blackheath.

Eastbound traffic will be diverted via the A20 but the westbound carriageway will remain open, while the eastbound 53 and 386 buses will be diverted via Lewisham Road.

Director of road network management at TfL Dana Skelley said: "By consulting with English heritage, we’ve worked hard to ensure the reconstruction of the carriageway respects the special landscape of Blackheath, while still meeting the demands of one of London’s busiest roads.

“We are also working closely with the London borough council’s of Greenwich and Lewisham to ensure disruption is kept to a minimum.”

come on please, what a load of ****, this disrupts everyone coming into london and for what bloody cycling lanes, with all that grass its so **** stupid, also how much notice was we given NONE, i travel this route everyday and its going to add at least 30 minutes to my journey

Wife works in Rotherhithe. Used to get bus to New Cross and then East London Line until that was shut for 3 years. Now this road is shut, it took her 2 hours to make a 5 mile journey as all the roads and buses are screwed. she is forced to go into london bridge and back out again, paying twice as much for the dubious privilige of travelling into zone 1. What idiot decided to completely shut this major road for 2 months??? Surely the work could have been phased or done overnight?

These roadworks are an absolute nightmare for local residents. I live on Creek Road in Greenwich, which is precisely where the bulk of the diverted traffic is now flowing to. Now all I can hear all day is sirens and horns blaring outside my home, which prevents me from concentrating in the day and sleeping at night. In addition, it will not be long before there is an accident here, such is the sheer volume of traffic. Where was the information and warnings beforehand for local residents?? I am absolutely livid about this...particularly as I have learned that this will now go on for a minimum of 8 weeks.

Details of email sent to TFL

Perhaps you could answer the following 4 points regards the Blackheath Roadworks

(1) Why were these roadworks not carried out in July/August when
traffic is much lighter due to Schools on holidays and also the
weather is much more settled
than in February/March

(2) Are the workforce working 7days a week to ensure roadworks are completed
quickly if not why? (There are no houses in the immediate vicinity)

(3) Will the bus lanes be suspended to allow traffic to proceed quicker

(4) Have the appropriate traffic lights been rephased so the extra
traffic using these alternative routes flows quicker

The surface of this stretch of road is one of the worst in London and its reconstruction long overdue. It's such a shame, though, that TfL did not take the opportunity to use the road space to construct a bus lane in one or both directions. One of the main routes into central London (53) suffers lengthy delays here, caused by the one-person-per-car-b
rigade who insist on driving in the rush hour.
