Southfields station finally gets a face lift

First published in News by

Southfields station will finally have a lift installed after three years of campaigning from Putney MP Justine Greening.

Residents were told the station would be upgraded back in 2005, but no work was undertaken.

However, a spokesperson for TfL confirmed work would begin at the end of the month and continue until late 2010.

The multi-million pound refurbishment will also provide step-free access from street to platform, an open ticket hall, new ticket gates, customer information points, better lighting and CCTV.

Putney MP Justine Greening said: “We've had to wait a long time but the station modernisation is finally going ahead. The lift will make it much easier for everyone to use the station, whether disabled, a parent with a child or any other person who finds the very steep steps difficult to get up and down.

“Improving the lighting should help ensure that passengers are safer, especially during these dark winter evenings.”

A TfL spokesperson said: “Works should be complete by Autumn 2010 with minimal impact on residents and businesses around Southfields station as the majority will be confined within the station premises."
