Everyone loves to see a bickering couple on stage or screen, two that spring to mind are Den and Angie in EastEanders and the slapstick, murderous couple in Father Ted who suddenly turn all lovey-dovey when a third party arrives.
And Two, the new show to come to the Colourhouse Theatre as part of Abbeyfest 2008, runs along these lines, particularly the former example as it is set in a pub. Two is a series of vignettes that skillfully combine pathos and humour, with all the fourteen characters played by just two actors - Daniel Creasey and Yvie Magee.
During the course of the evening assorted customers pass in and out; including the hilarious Alice and Fred who have “never been the same since Elvis died” and the slick-talking lothario Moth. All these characters are linked not only by the pub, but also by their battle with love and their conflicts between public facade and private emotion. This hilarious and touching play is written by Jim Cartwright, the award-winning writer of The Rise and Fall of Little Voice.
Two, the Colour House Theatre, Merton Abbey Mills, SW19 2RD; Monday, August 11, Saturday, August 16, 7.30pm (no perf Friday, August 15), tickets £9/£7, to book call the box office on: 07984 089 438 or 01483 485 349.
