Works at the Motspur Park train station are scheduled to end soon in an array of improvements to stations in South London.
As part of the national Access for All programme backed by the Department for Transport (DfT), Network Rail is collaborating with South Western Railway and the London Borough of Merton Council to install a step-free footbridge, providing step-free access to the island platform for all passengers.
The renovations also include better lighting and security cameras to be installed in and around the new lifts as to improve visibility and security at the station.
The new lifts and covered footbridge come as plans are drawn up for a Crossrail 2, with Motspur Park being included in the prospective service. The plan would serve to benefit Motspur Park with roughly 8 trains an hour in either direction, along with reducing congestion on the crowded commuter route to London Waterloo.
Councillor Stephen Alambritis, Cabinet Member for Transport at Merton Council, said: “I’m delighted that we’ve been able to bring improvements forward for Motspur Park station. Delivering step-free access here will hugely benefit the local community, allowing those with mobility impairments to travel further and more freely as well as bringing safety improvements for all travellers.”
