Trevor Olrog formerly of Richmond and now living in Australia wrote in May via the web: "I read the article Help salute the lives of servicemen' (February 1 and February 13, 2008) with great interest about Fred Abbott and his sister Jean Cook who are researching servicemen who died during World War II.

These servicemen were old boys of Gainsborough Road School, Richmond whose names were inscribed on a memorial.

One of the names on the Gainsborough School plaque is E W Olrog (Ernie). He is my uncle, brother of my father William John Christian (W J C) (Bill) Olrog.

Ernie died when his submarine, the Odin, was sunk by an Italian destroyer in 1940.

In turn my father (Bill Olrog) was missing and presumed killed when the Japanese invaded Singapore in 1942. His death was not confirmed until late 1946. His name is on the war memorial in Kranji Singapore but nothing is known of his body.

My father, and the names of two others, appear on a memorial plaque in the old Richmond Post Office With reference to the memorial which now hangs in Shene School, I am surprised that W J C Olrog does not appear although, on reflection, I am not sure which Richmond school he attended.

He was born on December 24 1905 and would have been a few years older than Ernie.

I was born in 1934, the younger brother of Peter, and son of Bill and Cora née Palmer. I attended Vineyard and later a school in Teddington and Gainsborough.

I later studied at a radio college and qualified as a seagoing radio officer and on leaving the sea in 1958 I came to live in Australia.

Over the years I have made numerous visits to UK and of course visits to Kranji.

During an early visit to Richmond I was advised of a scroll of honour that was then located in the parish church.

I discovered that my father's name was not on this scroll and, at that time, I spoke with the church and an archival officer in the town hall with a view to his name being included. On subsequent visits I found that the scroll had not been amended and I had then written to the town Hall with no result. On a later visit I found that the scroll had been moved to the town hall.

I will be interested to know whether my father is, in fact, a Gainsborough old boy. I would also ask the town hall for W J C Olrog to be added to the scroll.

I can conjecture that the reason that my father's name does not appear on such memorials is because his death was not confirmed until 1946, a year after the armistice on August 15 1945, and the names of those that had fallen my have already been listed or registered.
