Extreme clashes between the military of Sudan and the country's paramilitary force have broken out into civil war, but what caused this sudden outbreak, and what are the potential consequences of these intense clashes?

In the middle of April, these sudden clashes broke out between these two main factions of the military regime due to an extreme power struggle. With the two forces possessing loyalties to different leaders, the Sudanese armed forces being loyal to Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the paramilitaries to Gen Mohamed Hamdan Dagolo, a power struggle became rooted within the country of Sudan. After the uprising in 2019 which revealed information regarding Omar al-Bashir, a dictatorial ruler of Sudan, who had reportedly deliberately built up these two strong military forces to set them against each other, tensions were extremely high in Sudan, and a civil war seemed imminent.

These intense clashes have killed hundreds of people in the region and sent thousands fleeing for refuge out of the war-torn country of Sudan. Despite the promise of a ceasefire, there has been no progress from either side towards this, with no changes in the violence occurring since the first shots being fired on Saturday the 15th of April 2023. Many hospitals where the fighting is occurring are either evacuated or under threat from the forces, and the official Sudan Medical Association have posted on social media regarding the current threat and danger in the country, warning families of the possibility of unexploded weaponry scattered across the city. Currently, Sudan is extremely unsafe for civilians, with many attempting to escape the country and seek refuge elsewhere.
