Part of what makes the community at Newstead Wood so unique is the variety of backgrounds that the students have, so it seems fitting to have a day for people to dress in their cultural clothes. Most students go all out and this year was no different. On Friday, everywhere you looked, you could see every colour of the rainbow adorned with sparkles and glitter.
There was a voluntary donation that went towards supporting the charities ‘War Child’ and ‘Sickle Cell Society’. However there was other fundraising going on in the sports hall at lunchtime. One of the highlights of the day was the cultural fayre in which roughly 30 stalls were set up by students to raise money for their chosen charity. There was cultural food and drink on offer as well as jewellery and other cultural items.
The other events included a Sari wrapping workshop that was run in the textiles department and the Cultural Arts Exhibition in the DT block. Another activity attracting lots of attention was the Teacher’s MasterChef. Students were notified prior to the day that they could ask their teachers to nominate themselves in the competition. There were judges selected from each year group but anyone could go to see what the excitement was going on in the food tech rooms.
Although it was lessons at normal for most of the day, the students thoroughly enjoyed the day and said, “We love seeing the different clothes people wear and everyone looks absolutely stunning as always.”
