CHINGFORD: Boy cyclist seriously injured

A TEENAGE cyclist was left with serious injuries after he hit a car which failed to stop.

The driver was believed to be overtaking another motorist when the 15-year-old was knocked off his bike yesterday evening.

Graham Barnes, of Low Hall Lane, Chingford, saw the emergency services attending to the boy who was hit at the junction between Chingford Mount Road and Hall Lane at 5.50pm.

He said: "One of the boy's friends said the driver hit him so hard he went sailing through the air. The boy must have had life-threatening injuries because ambulance crews did not move him for an hour and a half."

A London Ambulance spokeswoman said the boy's right leg was seriously broken, his head was cut and he had cuts and bruises all over his body.

Firefighters from Chingford were the first emergency service to arrive and gave the teenager first aid.

An ambulance, a fast response car, and an air ambulance (HEMS) also attended.

The teenager was taken to hospital with life threatening injuries but was later transferred to the Royal London Hospital where he is now in a stable condition.

A 26 year-old man later attended an east London police station and was arrested on suspicion of leaving the scene of an accident.

He was bailed to return at a later date.

Police are continuing their inquiries.
