SCHOOLS in Bexley which are able to demonstrate they can give support to children with dyslexia can qualify for a new award.

The first schools in the borough to qualify have just been presented with the British Dyslexia Association's Dyslexia Friendly Award.

As well as having their lessons observed, the schools were asked to produce a portfolio of evidence to show the procedures and strategies they use to help pupils with dyslexia.

At the presentation, in the civic offices in Bexleyheath Broadway, 13 schools were given the awards by deputy mayor Councillor Nick O'Hare.

Council cabinet member for schools Councillor Simon Windle spoke to teachers and pupils about meeting the learning needs of all children.

Margaret Malpas from the British Dyslexia Association stressed the importance of the awards.

Teachers and teaching assistants at Bexley schools receive regular dyslexia training.

Parents and governors are invited to conferences on the support available and how to raise awareness of dyslexia.

The council is also working to achieve the British Dyslexia Quality Mark for local councils.
