Get set for the 2012 Olympic Games job opportunities

FURTHER initiatives have been announced to help both individuals and companies benefit from the forthcoming 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

A roadshow to raise awareness about job opportunities brought by the Games will tour London, visiting Bromley, Woolwich and Bexley.

The Get Set London Roadshow is designed to give Londoners information about the job and skills opportunities available in the run-up to the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Organised by the Learning Skills Council (LSC) in partnership with London 2012, the Mayor of London and the London Development Agency, the roadshows aim to get 70,000 people across the City into work by 2012 and hope the tour of 33 boroughs between January and April this year will help to achieve this.

Temporary pods will be erected in shopping centres, parks and town centres featuring interactive sporting equipment and information on how musical acts can compete for a performance slot at the Olympic flag handover celebration in London in August.

The LSC regional director for London David Hughes said: "The Roadshow will provide Londoners with the opportunity to find out about the exciting range of courses and training available to them in their area."

He added: "Our aim is to provide people with the right skills so they can benefit from job opportunities the Games will bring."

The Get Set London Roadshow will visit The Glades Shopping Centre, High Street, Bromley on January 22; Woolwich town centre - exact location to be confirmed - on February 23, Downham Health and Leisure Centre, 7-9 Moorside Road, bromley on February 24. Details for Bexley are to be confirmed.

In addition, a ground breaking business dating agency was launched last Wednesday to help companies based in the South East compete for business contacts helping to deliver the Games at london2012.com/business The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) and London Organising Committee (LOCOG) predict they will allocate £6bn of work as part of their estimated 75,000 future business opportunities covering direct contractors and their supply chains over the coming years.

More than 3000 companies based in the south east have registered to receive e-alerts about procurement opportunities, essential information about how to supply London 2012, business events and the business dating agency CompeteFor which will match companies to thousands of opportunities supplying contractors.

CompeteFor, co-funded by the South East England Development Agency, will match companies with opportunities which suit their business according to advertisements supplied by ODA and LOCOG.

Businesses will be invited, by email, to apply for the recommended opportunities by filling out a short tailored application form.

Olympic minister Tessa Jowell said: "The London 2012 Business Network will provide invaluable support for companies and is one of the keys to unlocking the £6bn of contracts up for grabs.
