Guru Nanak, was the founder of sikhism and was the first of ten gurus. Guru Nanak Gurpurab is celebrated on the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji and this year commemorates the guru's 552nd birthday.
Guru Nanak taught sikhs that everyone was equal regardless of status and how we should all value each other. Guru Nanak also taught sikhs about the importance of helping others and giving back.
In celebration of Guru Nanak Gurpurab, many sikhs take part in morning ceremonies in the gurdwara and then recite praises of the guru. This is normally then followed by a lunch in the langar and a night time prayer. Many sikhs also eat kada prashad which is a sacred delicacy and many sikhs also light candles and fireworks to show the festivities.
I hope you have learnt something new and now know all about Guru Nanak Gurpurab.
