Sir Elton John is lending his support to former Met policeman Brian Paddick's bid to become London Mayor.

Balham-born Mr Paddick said yesterday he was discussing the best way Sir Elton and his partner David Furnish could support his campaign.

Among the options being considered is a fundraising dinner for the Liberal Democrats candidate.

Mr Paddick, 49, who before he retired as deputy assistant commissioner last April had been the Met's highest ranking openly gay copper, said his main aims were less crime, better transport, cleaner air and fewer Londoners living in poverty.

He stands in this year's contest against Labour's sitting mayor Ken Livingstone and the Conservatives' Boris Johnson.

The former Sutton Manor High School student retired after 30 years in the force following a clash with Commissioner Sir Ian Blair over the handling of the Jean Charles de Menezes shooting in July 2005.

what has sexualty got to do with being mayor?, same as that "first black mayor " bile that was reported recently.
Either they has the credentials and policies that people want or they don't.

He's a person placed on this earth to do what he was meant to do and that was to live a life of fullfillment as he choses. It doesn't matter what kind of person he is. Not one of us here on this earth are anything perfect so why judge, If he can do the job let him, sexuality doesn't do the job, the person does the job so lay off the the criticism, He'll probably do the job better than any before him. Go to it Brian Paddick show them what you are made of!!

So, "Elton John backs gay former cop's bid for mayor" - although "backs" might be an unfortunate choice of word in this case. Even so, I should have thought getting support from the like of Elton John would be the the (French) kiss of death to any politician.
