A HIGH-PROFILE mosque may be pulled down and rebuilt to improve its community facilities.

Noor Ul Islam, in Leyton High Road, is currently based in a former video shop, snooker hall, and wine merchant's, and is seeking planning permission to replace them with a single modern building.

While the mosque failed to get through to the semi-final of a recent television competition aimed at finding the best mosque in the country, it was praised by Adid Mahi, the producer of the programme, for its attempts at inclusiveness and reputation for youth education.

Yusuf Hasa, chairman of the Noor Ul Islam (Light of Islam) Trust, said the rebuilding exercise was not to increase the size of the building, but the scope of what could be offered there.

"We want to have a multi-purpose building where we can keep each room separate, so we can have different classes happening at the same time," he said.

There are a variety of activities open to non-Muslims, such as a health clinic, karate classes and talks and debates, while Muslims are offered counselling services, exercise groups and sewing classes, with the sexes segregated in accordance with Islamic law.

The rebuild will be paid for by trust fundraising.

The mosque, which sees up to 500 people go through its doors for Friday prayers, will be opening to the general public during Islam Awareness Week from November 17 to 28.

A free talk and exhibition is to close the week, and will be held in Walthamstow Assembly Hall from 7pm to 10pm.

For further details, contact Noor Ul Islam on 8558 0786.

When will these people become PC friendly.

It's alright for them to be treated as equals (and rightly so in this day and age) in this society, but when it comes to their Islamic laws they should treat their women and children as equals, and not go down the road of segregation!

And it is the mosques with segrgated facilities that consider themselves forward thinking - many don't allow women at all. Women have to pray at home, and are forbidden to pray at all on certain days of the month.
As if God can be told not to listen to his daughters just because some man says so.

Islam is no way in the future in this country. You and the rest of your Islamists are welcome to relocate to Saudi or some other muslim country where you could live like proper muslims. True muslims dont try to have the best of both worlds e.g. the freedom found in the West and the restrictions of an Islamist society. Call me a racist or whatever, the word has become quite a joke.

Since when did segregation mean unequal treatment. What some of these posts imply is that single sex schools for example equal a raw deal! What are you so afraid of?....let me guess...extremism!

segregation, how do you ensure that you are being treated fairly if your segregated, segregation on inherent grounds, sex in schools and the mosque example, race in the good old USA all those years ago and much more recently in South Africa. To take someone and judge them on what they can not change and has no bearing on the remit of the judgment explicitly shouts that the content of that persons personality is no more important than the colour of there eyes or length of there name.

I can tell by your comment fair-man that you only live upto half of your name!

Right, "build more islam in essex" which I doubt is your correct name, read this carefully and tell all your friends.
ISLAM IS NOT A RACE.
Islam is an ideology. Criticism of an ideology is not racism, because the ideology is not a race.
Understand that. Get used to the idea.
Playing the race card will not work any longer.
Accusations of racism should not and will not silence critics of the ideology.

Well said fola and F Guiness, if people were aloud to speak there minds on how they feel, and more people did so, with out getting arrested for racial abuse etc, perhapes we would have some hope for this country, after all the majority of Britain were not consulted or asked if we wanted to intergrate with other nationalities, we have had it forced upon us, with no choice, so you can understand to why people feel bitter. We should not have Mosques in this country, we do not here of churches being built. This is a catholic and christian country, and shall always be. Get rid of the PC brigade, AND START LOOKING AFTER THE BRIT'S. The mosques, create problems for alot of road user's and residents around the area of it, theres double parking, yellow lines they are parked on, but guess what, NO TRAFFIC WARDENS. IF they want to live in this country, the women and children live as equals as do the all the brits.

Don, you are the epitome of some British nationals, racist to the core.
There is nothing PC about building a mosque if there is a need for it. A mosque not only provides praying facilities but teaches you a lot about other areas of life. It is also open to different people of different faiths. If you ever get your mind out of your pre-historic views you should visit the LMC mosque in East London and see what they do for the whole community.
You say we should look after the Brits but are Muslims not Brits?
If you read the article properly they do not want to build a mosque, they want to modify the existing building!!!!!!

"This is a catholic and christian country, and shall always be."

You are showing your lack of education here mate.

England is officially a Protestant country and has been since the sixteenth century.

The monarch has to be a member of the Church of England.

And the Church of England has a representation in parliament.

Ever heard of a chap called Henry VIII?

Nah--didn't think so, you uneducated twit.

Some of the comments made can be considerd and argued both ways. the comment on segregation, and being a Chatolic contry is a statement which should be considerd carefully. Frm What I know, even the old Christian Religion of this country did not allow Women few of there rights that they hve now, but only after protest and other non Christian democartical procedures they where given rights. Another is the Christian religion also practiced segregation in schools and churches in the past so this was always found as an element of religion, Chritianity is a religion which share chrasteristic with other religon, are we not all son of Adam and Eve

Whatever doctrine this country was built on whether catholic or protestant, it definitely wasnt Islam. Christianity has moved on and is not repressive and backward as Islam. We value our freedom, our way of life and the lack of oppression of our women. Islam is intolerant and there is hardly any Islamic country that allows the open practice of Christianity without clamping down. Whereas you have Muslims coming here demanding every right under the sun and the useless Labour and Conservative govt bending backwards whenever they bleat about their 'human rights'and 'multiculturalism'. I am a black woman and i am fed up of these people trying to force their backward religion on us here in the uK. The UK has always been a tolerant country but some of these Muslims are taking the biscuit and should be put on the next plane back to Iran or some hardline muslim country where they could live under oppression as that is what they seem to like.

Christianity has not indeed moved on but its people have, I have great respect for thoes who vist the church every sunday and thoes who believe in brother hood, but most of the comments seem like people are not intrested about these things. My point with the moved on bit is that the scriptures of God has not changed but thoes who interpret it.

hey fola, its pretty rich coming from a black woman talking about religion and being british, perhaps you fail to look in the mirror or rather the "past" does "slavery" ring any bells? tell me what was so Christian about that? you say "why don't they go back to Iran or another islamic country" etc, but you failed to recognise the true fact that even you are classed as a second class citizen, why shouldn't all black people go back to Africa, jamaica, or even put back into slavery where you were rightly treated by your masters? come on! you shouldn't attack the faith if there are a handful of misguided individuals within it.
would it be appropriate to say that "all black people are criminals" and all white people peadophiles? "NO! It wouldn't would it? so take a back seat and chill,,, or check your roots and your own history....

I was deeply saddened and upset to see 4 pages promoting lieing islamic propaganda in the wfm paper - entitled Islam awareness week.

If only people would realise that muslims consider it honourable to lie to promote islam and take the time to find out what islam really teaches (not from muslims!), they would be horrified.

I do not hate muslims and I am not racist but I hate such wicked evil lies.

You make it sound like you know Islam inside out, like "been there done that" sort of thing, and the newspaper writers have no idea of islam not to mention neither do muslims who follow the religion. what do you think Islam is a Brutal, violent religion with no Civilised morals, so the question is how much you know about Islam. It seems like what you believe to Islam to be is what you see on the news, What do you think, Saudi Arabia rulings is the root of Islam, or does suicide bombers who tell you they are following Islam. let me know did you go to any of the mosque oped days. I realy doubt it.
