Legendary showbiz hounds have been honoured on the world's first permanent Dog Walk of Fame in Battersea Park.

The first stars to be inaugurated were selected by the public from a shortlist created by film and dog experts.

The movie dogs chosen included Toto from the Wizard of Oz, Lassie, Bullseye from Oliver! and Fang from the Harry Potter films.

Chance and Shadow from Homeward bound and Gromit were also honoured along with Bobby from Greyfriars Bobby, The True Story of a Dog.

Breeds representing each of the dogs attended the unveiling and walked up the red carpet as other pooches, including Wellard from EastEnders, looked on.

Sky Movies and the Kennel Club are behind the development, which will see each dog commemorated with a plaque and a bench by the park's famous bandstand.

Caroline Kisko, Kennel Club Secretary, said: "Dogs play a very important role in our lives, through their companionship, unconditional love and rewarding relationship they give to us.

"It is fantastic to see that this if felt the world over through the recognition given by the film industry, and the number of these films that are box office hits prove how much the public have for dogs in general."
