A schoolgirl who fell on tracks at Worcester Park station as she ran to catch a train is being treated in intensive care.

The 15-year-old, a student at Raynes Park High School, suffered massive blood loss in the accident and has had her spleen removed.

She also has an injured left foot, is thought to have a fractured pelvis and will undergo more surgery today.

The girl was taken away on a stretcher and rushed to St George's Hospital in Tooting as police cordoned off the accident site yesterday.

She is believed to be in a stable but serious condition and the next 48 hours are critical.

The incident caused chaos for commuters who were told to get off the 7.52am train from Epsom to London Waterloo at Worcester Park yesterday.

British Transport Police were called around 8am after the girl slipped and fell between the carriages and on to the track spokesman for London Ambulance Service said: "We were called just after 8am to reports of a person under the train at Worcester Park station.

"We sent two fast response cars, an ambulance and an officer to the scene; the first of which was there in six minutes.

"We treated a teenage girl who was taken to St George's Hospital."

Raynes Park High School's headteacher, Ian Newman, said the school was in regular contact with the family.

"Our thoughts are with family and friends at this time and we hope for a speedy recovery," he said.

The circumstances of this terrible accident are unclear and I hope the girl makes a good recovery. Having said that the surface on the platform is not brilliant and I tripped on an uneven part this morning (2/10). Stations should take steps to ensure a better platform surface and one that is not slippy in wet weather.

Worcester Park Resident, Worcester Park says...
7:53pm Tue 2 Oct 07

I hope the school girl makes a full recovery, South West trains need to sort out thier platforms.

The people around me this morning who were more worried about getting to work should be ashamed of themselves.

Stoneleigh Resident, Stoneleigh says...

To Worcester Park Resident at 1953.
The stations are the responsibility of Network Rail (Government backed). South West Trains are responsible for running the trains.

A Commuter, Epsom says...

In common with the other passengers who happened to be on this train this morning, I feared the worst after hearing the screams as the train pulled into the station. Thank you, Local Guardian, for reporting the facts. It seems the station announcements of a 'suspected fatality' were premature, thank God! I hope the
unfortunate girl makes a full recovery and that Southwest Trains use a portion of my fare to buy some grip tape for the wet platforms. Try the skateboard shop.

My friend this morning was terribly shaken up after she witnesed the accident this morning. hopefully the girl makes a good recovery and that the platforms will see some improvment to the old tarmack.

I was on the train, it was very upsetting and I don't understand why the driver didn't put an annoucement out to ask if there was a doctor on board, instead the commuters had to rush along the length of the train asking if anyone was a nurse or a doctor. Pray the girl makes a speedy recovery.

diane mcgrath, putney says...

To lauren, and family, everyone is shocked to hear what happened today.
just want to send you all our love and best wishes and hope you make a full recovery, everyone is thinkijg of you.
And as regards the commuters who moaned about delays, you should be discusted with yourselfs, imagine if your daughter was hit by a train.
People just do not care, its morally wrong.
As regards train stations, so many are in serious need of updating in everyway.
There are so many dangerous platforms, how many more tragic accidents does there need to be, before something is done.
best wishes to you , and hope you make a full recovery, we are all thinking of you in putneyxxxxxxxxxxx

Jacqui Roberts, Worcester Park says...
10:39pm Tue 2 Oct 07

I was there this morning, very glad to hear that the girl is alive and recovering, South West trains should check the facts before displaying on the train indicator/tv monitor at the station that there had been a fatality, it was very disturbing.

Anon, Worcester Park says...
10:47pm Tue 2 Oct 07

I agree (yellow lines are there for a reason).I wish her a full recovery but there's no blame to be had on the quality of the pavement.

A, says...
11:08pm Tue 2 Oct 07

Not only are the yellow lines there for a reason, I see that the news report above says the girl was running for the train. Apart from being illegal to run on station platforms, there is the notion of common sense. Whatever happened to the concept of personal responsibility? So many people here seem to want to blame someone else.

Kevin and family, West Ewell says...
11:24pm Tue 2 Oct 07

I was stuck at Stoneleigh this morning and as a result of the ensuing bedlam chose to walk the 4 miles to work, big deal; the fatality words issued by the rail network were dispicable - particularly as it turns out there was no foundation for this - on my trek I saw the ambulance leave WP station with the police escort and wished the injured party well; their urgency suggested hope - upon learning the accident victim was a schoolgirl, as a father to a young daughter it bought things right into focus for me - Lauren and your family please accept our absolute best wishes.

tees, worcester park says...
11:55pm Tue 2 Oct 07

Nice one A! What you have never run for a train, some people are beyond compassion. This is a child , a beautiful girl, with a fun loving personality, and with only 15 years, already has more of a life and most definatley more friends than you could wish to.50+ people waiting at the hospital just to catch a glimpse of our Lauren. Wishing you the best darling from all of your dear friends, our love goes to your mum and dad and we hope that you pull through.

Nick, Worcester Park says...
11:59pm Tue 2 Oct 07

I was there this morning, and I can't believe the callousness of those who complain about yellow lines and personal responsibility and the idiots who believe press reports about the girl running for the train, the platform was packed with people, probably six deep where she fell, I don't know how the girl slipped between the platform and the train, I just know that a young girl is in intensive care and that we should all say a prayer for her. I for one only have thoughts for her and hope she makes a full recovery.

XYZ, says...
9:06am Wed 3 Oct 07

In reply to stoneleigh resident, South West Trains are responsible for their stations (Except Waterloo for whom Network Rail are reponsible). Same goes for any other TOC.

As a regular user of WP station, I believe it is safe as it is. You are no more at risk at WP than any other station. You just have to apply common sense...rain = wet = slippery surfaces. It is unfortunate what happened, but I do not think blaming SWT, on the basis of the platform, is fair. The next thing is people will be wanting carrying onto trains - its just silly.

My wishes go out to the girl and her family during this hard time and I hope she fully recovers.

RG, Worcester Park says...
9:13am Wed 3 Oct 07

I think people need to accept this for what it is, a terrible accident, no fault of anyones just unfortunate circumstances. Its easy to blame either the platform - or the girl for running (!!), doesnt everyone run for a train at some point ! Fact is it happened, but amazingly she is now in hospital recovering, with best wishes to her and family for a full recovery X

N - Worcester Park, Worcester Park says...
9:40am Wed 3 Oct 07

I was on the platform at WP yesterday and was fortunate NOT to have seen this terrible accident. As the platform was crowded by the ticket area there was no way Lauren could have been running for the train. I would like to pass comment on the Local shop keepers who were buying their morning coffee in a local coffee shop after this terrible accident and were joking about how inconsiderate the person who fell was to cause so much inconvenience to others. SHAME ON YOU - you know who you are! Have some compassion and humanity for others misfortune! I will not use your shop again. To Lauren I hope you make a full and speedy recovery.

RG, Worcester Park says...
10:10am Wed 3 Oct 07

There are some heartless people around, what a shame some of them live in Worcester Park. Thankfully they seem to be in a minority looking at the messages of good wishes people are leaving. I'm disgusted at some of the comments people made about inconvenience. Lets hope nothing ever happens like this to their families.

Victoria, Ewell, Epsom says...
10:18am Wed 3 Oct 07

After reading these comments, i find myself disgusted with some of these people. Lauren had done nothing wrong, just wanted to get to where she was going like the rest of you, and all you can think about is how it was her fault and yellow lines!! I hope nothing this unfortunate happens in your pathetic lives. It makes me so angry at how someone can come on this site and right negative comments about something so serious and unfortunate. Get well soon Lauren and and best wishes to you and your family x x

For those of you who have posted negative inconsiderate heartless comments please keep your opinions to yoursleves! I know lauren and her family and they do not need to see remarks like this!!! and nor does anyone else, there are some very selfish inconsiderate people out there and you dont know the facts so keep it buttoned!!
Thinking of you becky and robert and the rest of the family we are praying for you all

God bless you and our thoughts are with you.

In response to all the people who say it was the girl's own fault for running, or being on the wrong side of the line:

Why can't the station have platform edge doors, like the ones between Westminster and North Greenwich on the Jubilee Line extension?

Given the fact that Worcester Park does not have these kind of doors, do you still think it was the girl's fault?

Big Ron, Croydon says...
12:13pm Wed 3 Oct 07

Thanks for the update Jack.
Wishing you a speedy and full recovery, Lauren.
Kindest wishes to you and your family.

(To all those people who are all to quick to apportion blame, HAVE A HEART WILL YOU?!! A young schoolgirl has been seriously injured in an accident. Did your parents' not instill in you the values of care, compassion and consideration of others, or were you dragged up instead of brought up? Small minded selfish individuals).

RG, Worcester Park says...
12:17pm Wed 3 Oct 07

Any safety measures would be welcome, I get the train from WP every day, I'm only 5ft and every day people are pushing and shoving with no consideration for others. I hope Laurens operation went well. Thoughts are with Lauren and ALL her family and friends x

Can everyone please take into account when posting messages this is a young girl we are talking about. Just stop and think what her family must be going through right now. Could any of you imagine what it would be like to be informed that you child had been hit by a TRAIN. Lauren i hope you pull through this and your Mum and Dad get strength from the heartfelt messages. xxx god bless to you all.

I saw this terrible accident happen and it was that simply an accident. I hope and pray that the poor girl makes a full recovery and my thoughts and prayers are with her and her family. There where some very brave people on that platform yesterday who looked for her and tried to help. It was very distressing for all of us and we tried to do what we could. Of course our distress is nothing compared to that of the family and child.

I feel absolutely terrible now for moaning about my journey to work yesterday. My heart goes out to the young girl and her family and friends and I hope she has a speedy recovery. Let's all be much more careful in future. So glad everyone who was near her were so kind.

train driver, says...
2:51pm Wed 3 Oct 07

I drive on this line most days and have had my share of heart stopping moments when people have leant down to pick up a bag or stepped in front of someone to move down the platform. Mostly there isn't time to sound the horn - I always get filthy looks and rude gestures when I do - and certainly there is no chance of stopping in time.
I hope this girl makes a full recovery but, apart from her close friends and family, the public's memory is short. Everyone was well back from the platform edge at Worcester Park this morning but in a few days time it will be business as usual.
Spare a thought for the train's driver who would have done everything he could to avoid this accident.

Ok people, firstly i want to express my best wishes to the injured girl and hope she recovers well, however i wanted to comment on some of the people in the debate that has ensued. 'A' makes some very good points and was basing them on what they read in the article, if as was stated below, the girl was not running then therefore people cannot blame the state of the platform as, in my opinion, if she was not running the state of the platform would not have caused her to fall between the tracks. Lastly i would like the shame the abusive comments in response to comments like 'A's and point out that they are entitled to their opinion without petty remarks being made about the amount of friends they have. At the end of a day it was an terrible accident and now all we can hope for is that the girl recovers well.

Lauren - I don't know you and I did not see you on Monday as I waited for the 8 am train at WP station - but I can't stop thinking about you. I wanted to tell you that so many people are sending you their best wishes like me. Your family have said you are a fighter so grab hold of your life and hold on tight honey - you can still have everything you dreamed of and wanted. To everyone else watching from the sidelines it only took the blink of an eye for Lauren's whole world to come crashing down - so pause for a minute and forget about how it happened and who's fault (if anyones) it is because it wont change what happened to Lauren on Monday - and remember it could easily have been YOU.

i feel obliged to add my comment, i work at the station and on a daily basis see people bolt through the doors with no concern for others and expect you to give them their paper or drinks as their train is pulling in of already stationary and huff and puff if not quick enough, there are always a number of people running for every train that comes in especially in rush hour. The floor entrance can be very slippery more so than the platform and im a witness to impatient people with no regard for other pushing past to get trains.. The platform was extrealy busy and the young girl would have been unable to run very fast past all the commuters and would not been out of the question of other people pushing as the train pulled in. This is a young girl who has has a terrible freak accident and i was disgusted with peoples attitude and comments and actually bit back at a commuter that passed comment on the fact the girl was probably mucking about, which even if it had of been the case which IT WAS NOT seemed to have no concern for her welfare, There are some insensative and awful people out there who were more bothered that no coffe was available and how they could get to work. The silly insensitive people that are commenting on "faults" have no idea what it's like to have a tragic accident like this happen to someone they know and love, the people that make these comments are the ones who on a daily basis barge passed just so they get a seat and have no respect for anyone else around them. Dear Lauren

I'm the bloke who helped you on the track whilst we waited for the ambulance. Sorry for that broken promise that the ambulance would be along in two minutes. It could have been so much worse though and I'm so glad they got you out. I called the hospital but they couldn't give any information as I'm not family/ didn't know your surname etc. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family and I know you have the strength to pull through. I hope to see you soon on the 8am train and to perhaps speak to you once you've recovered.

I personally will go round to all the doors with a few friends and get everyone to sign this card to Lauren and the Family.

i have already commented but choose to remain annonomous this time.. Firstly and in no way do i take anything away from family as they must be going through unimaginable grief, but i was present at station and although i did not witness the accident it has upset me immensly being a mother myself. It is obvious that the majority of people wish lauren well. For those that have their views on how it happened the answers is simple, unless you actually saw exactly what happened please do not assume, just because lauren was a schoolgirl do no jump to conclustion she was running or mucking around. Travelling on a train is one of the most dangerous means of travel for the fact of the commuters and their rush to get everywhere, i worked in London for 20yrs and suffered being pushed shoved and abused on a daily basis. So before we all make comment lets wait to hear the report form the railway or police as the accident would have been caught on cctv. But unless you can put your hand on your heart and tell me that youhave never run for a train or bus even as a child or stumbled and triped through no fault of your own lets no condem a young girl who is clearly suffering a huge battle for recovery. Also the gentleman who was on the track with lauren without a second thought please do not think you have to apologize for breaking a promise, you done a heroic thing and comforted here in this trauma and you telling her that ambulance was on way would have helped her mentally. The quick response were there as quick as possible and your reassurance and comfort were A1. I hope you yourself have spoken to someone as on a total different level it must have been traumatic for you. It must comfort her mother and father to know that someone showed such compasison to her whilst waiting to be tented. Im sure as a family member quoted Lauren will be sitting next to you on the train once fully recovered. A day to look forward to. x x

In one single moment, the world you knew changed
Each second of glory had been rearranged
The sky above, once filled with wonder and light, became dark and lonely, yet you chose to fight

With faith as your beacon to guild you along

I have a daughter of the same age, also called Lauren, and I couldn't imagine how I would feel. I would also like to reiterate that people should stop complaining about delays they incurred due to this tragedy and pray for this young girl's recovery. A suggestion of safety on platforms would be to follow the Jubilee Line approach where screens are put up so that this kind of accident does not happen. Best Wishes to Lauren and her family. Hi Amanda, I'd like to thank you for your support im sure its appricated by the whole family and its a lovely gesture getting the card signed for lauren, I'm sure that she will appriciate it, I spoke to My brother Anthony today (Laurens Dad) her surgery went well on her foot, couldnt do much about a cople of toes but considering the degree of her over all injuries it could have been allot worse, shes's still under heavy sedation to give her body time to recover and shes understandablly in considerable pain so not fully awake, they obviously have to wait and see how she heals but her 2 pelvis and back opperations are complete to my knowledge, shes a very brave tough cookie and got a long road to recovery but the hospitial reckon the optimistic outlook for the near future is that she will hopefully be able to learn how to walk again and be moved from intensive care to a ward next week sometime maybe providing all goes well, shes not completly out of the woods yet but fingers crossed, its just a matter of waiting and hoping she responds to recovery well. I can immagine some of the mixed variations of her condition that might be going around, shes done so well to keep as strong as she has so deserves all the credit she gets for it. x

Dear Lauren, we all really hope that you are staying fighting everday.
we have created a lovely card for you from absolutely everyone on the Horne Way, including all the kids, and people that know you, and your mum and dad and all your family.
All the kids went round the estate this evening with a tin, a whip round for you, so when you get stronger you can treat yourself to some thing nice.
When its finished il give this card to your nan and grandad...
We are all thinking of you everyday, and to hear you are responding so well to all your treatment, is amazing, you are amazing Lauren.
Hold onto your fighting spirit, because thats whats getting you through this honey.
Keep fighting all the way, until you get to the end of this.
Sending love to your family, take care.
love from Diane Mcgrath, and all the boys, and all the kids on the estate.xx

TO ANYONE WANTING TO HELP.
I would like all those that wish Lauren well,To know that her mum and dad have said that they have had so many offers from people asking what they can do to help,(thank u x)Becky and rob have both said that they would like their friends and family to donate blood, Lauren has recieved so much life-saving donated blood and without donors, this of course would not have been possible, They would like to help other people who may need this life-saving service (just shows what caring people they are - thinking of other families at this terrible, heartbreaking time ). It takes about an hour to do,check your local blood servive info on line.
To all the special people who already donate THANK YOU SO MUCH, U REALLY R SPECIAL xx and i know this family will be forever grateful to u all.
Keep fighting Lauren, and to my good friends Becky and rob u have been so strong, thinking of u all always ****

Hoe is Lauren doing now? Is she back home? Is she on the men? How does she feel about the whole experience? Will she ever be able to go back onto a train?

She should tell her story. It will bring awareness to how crampt our platforms are getting. Perhaps people will sit up and listen now.

Wishing her the best!

I have only just read this and send my thanks that Lauren is recovering unlike my son who was killed when he slipped and fell into the gap at Gidea Park station late at night on 11thJan 07 .My son wasnt seen and wasnt found for a further 50 Minutes after 3 more trains had gone over him. This is why i am starting a campaign to make platforms safer and reduce gaps. Please contact me
