One of the most frustrating things about driving is surely not driving at all.

That's right, the dreaded traffic jam. We've all been there, heads peeking out windows trying to gauge why you haven't moved for what seems like an eternity, when in fact it is probably only a few minutes.

Well now it has been revealed how many long drivers will spend at a standstill for every mile they travel on a main road in Merton.

The data released by the Department for Transport shows that for every mile on one of the main roads across the area a car will be delayed by 118 seconds.

So for a daily commute of five miles, will be stuck waiting in traffic for about 10 minutes to the journey to get to work on time.

And Merton's drivers are right if they get furious about traffic jams, as they are delayed more than the majority of England, which overall had saw an average on just 47 seconds per mile.

These stop and start journeys also mean drivers in the borough are some are the slowest in the country, meandering along at 15mph on average.
