Croydon High Street will be closed to cars this Saturday to celebrate World Car Free Day.

Between 1.30-4.30pm it will become a ‘play street’, open to families and children to use for games and activities.

World Car Free Day is an international day of action, where motorists are encouraged to give up their vehicles for one day a year in favour of alternatives such as public transport, walking and cycling.

Councillor Stuart King, cabinet lead for environment and transport, said: “World Car Free Day is a great initiative to encourage people to make healthy life choices while helping our planet.

“Play streets are held across the borough on a regular basis and offer a fantastic way for communities to come together.

“Staff and members of other schemes across the borough will be on hand so why not come along, enjoy the day and find out more about setting up a play street in your area?”

Other play street events in the borough include Love Lane, winner of London Play Street of the Year award in 2016 and 2017, which is closed to cars on the second Sunday of every month between 2-4pm.

Anyone attending the High Street event is invited to bring games or activities.

Children should be supervised, bicycles and scooters are welcome.

Anyone interested in setting up their own play street should email cfp@croydon.gov.uk or call 020 8726 6400 ext. 63371.
