A woman has been found dead in Woolwich after a suspected arson attack. 

Fire crews were called to Centurion Square at 1.20am this morning to reports of a house fire. 

A woman believed to be aged in her late 40s was found dead inside.

Detectives have since launched a murder investigation after concluding that the fire was suspicious.

The Met Police are calling for any witnesses that might have information about the incident. 

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "At this stage, the fire is being treated as suspicious.

Enquiries in the full circumstances continue. Local CCTV footage will be reviewed and detailed forensic tests carried out."

Nearly two dozen 999 calls were made after a fire broke out and it took over two hours to control and put out the blaze. 

Eight engines carrying around 60 firefighters tackled the fire, London Fire Brigade said.

A man in his 60s and a woman in her 50s were taken to hospital from the property but they are not believed to be seriously injured.

LFB said: "Sadly one woman was found dead at the scene by crews wearing breathing apparatus."

The fire was under control by 3.12am and its cause is under investigation.

A crime scene remains in place and the Homicide and Major Crime Command have been made aware of this incident.

Detectives are keen to hear from anyone in the area - including local residents - who heard or saw anything suspicious before or after the fire started.
