The traveller saga in Bromley is rumbling on after an army of caravans were spotted in Norman Park.

This comes just a day after the council was granted a High Court injunction to prevent travellers from staying in the borough.

The week began with two illegal incursions at Hayes Common and Willett Recreation Ground in Petts Wood.

Green Street Green was the next traveller destination before further illegal takeovers of Whitehall Recreation Ground and Parkfield Way Recreation Ground.

A cyclist told News Shopper that travellers have now invaded Norman Park in Hayes Lane by “breaking a gate”.

“There was about 40 or 50 people there,” he said after spotting them this morning. “It is intimidating. Most of them have dogs.

“It is an area where people walk their dogs and people play football and train. It’s not nice having big groups of people just milling around.

“Something has to be done about it. Some of them seem to have builder trucks and we should stop giving these people work.

“The injunction is not doing much.”

The man, who lives by Whitehall Recreation Ground, said a huge mess was dumped once travellers left the public site there.

UPDATE - Travellers have been served a Section 61 notice and have until midnight to leave Norman Park.

Bromley Council said it is grateful to residents and friends-of-parks groups who have helped in recent clean-up operations.

Councillor Kate Lymer, executive councillor for public protection and enforcement, added: “We have faced a number of traveller incursions in recent days and on every occasion, as always, we have taken legal action to end these unauthorised encampments as soon as possible.

“This action, along with the police issuing their Section 61 notices, has been successful.

"These situations often unfold and change quickly but residents can be assured that we will always follow the legal processes open to us with the High Court injunction strengthening our legal position in this regard.”

A charity called Friends, Families and Travellers slammed the council yesterday for seeking a High Court injunction and argued some travellers have no choice but to stay on illegal land.

A spokesman said: “Local authorities across the country have largely failed to identify land for gypsy and traveller families to stop so it should come as little surprise to them when families pull up in public spaces and on private land. Everybody needs a place to live.”
