An upcoming festival in Beckenham will celebrate the life and legacy of legendary musician David Bowie.

The Bowie’s Beckenham Oddity festival will take place on Croydon Road Recreation Road on Saturday (August 11) in the park where the singer rose to stardom.

Bowie and his mates from the Beckenham Arts Lab played at The Growth Summer Festival nearly 49 years ago in what was remembered as the UK's first free festival.

This coincided with the release of his hit song Space Oddity which he later followed up with Memory of a Free Festival.

This Is Local London:

“Money raised at the nostalgic event will go towards restoring the Bowie Bandstand, which is expected to cost in excess £125,000.

Over £66,000 has already been donated to make the site a tribute to Bowie after his death in 2016 and for future musicians to follow in his footsteps.

Organiser of Bowie’s Beckenham Oddity fundraiser, Wendy Faulkner, said: “It’s not just about Bowie, but also all the people who were involved with him along his path to stardom.

“His ties to the borough and the bandstand are without question; he thrived here, having found the freedom to develop the songs that would later change him, change music and change the world.

“Slightly off the beaten track, it’s well worth the journey to come along to see it and experience it first hand. I'm pleased that David Bowie knew of the fundraising efforts, and donated signed items for the events before his passing.

“We will never see anyone like David Bowie again in our lifetime, a true legend, inspiration and star, and this is our way to keep his memory alive as well as that festival of 1969 and put the iconic bandstand on the map.”
