St Mary’s Church in Hampton led the parish’s first known full immersion outdoor baptism.

Reverend Ben Lovell led proceedings, on what was one of the hottest days of the year. The ceremony took place on the banks of the River Thames, opposite the church.

Six of the church congregation were baptised, including three young people, a baby and two adults.

The service was attended by hundreds of people, a mix of church members, the congregation and friends and family of the baptism candidates.

Reverend Alan Jackson assisted Reverend Lovell while John Soones, safety officer from the RNLI was on had to ensure the river was a safe place for the ceremony.

Lovell has been focused on growing the church into a young and vibrant place, he said: “Today sees our young adults and children follow in the footsteps of Jesus who was baptised in the river Jordan by John the Baptist.

“Baptism symbolises cleansing, reviving and is the symbol of new life, not just to the candidates but also for those who are present. It is also a way for the teenagers and adults to declare their beliefs publicly.”

Felix Murray aged 18 said: “I’ve chosen to declare my faith as I’ve just finished my first year at university and it’s a challenge to be a Christian in that environment sometimes. However, I’ve got through the year and my relationship with God is stronger. I wanted to say thank you.”

Matthew Green, father of Matilda Green, aged seven months said: “I love the fact we are using the beautiful river banks of the Thames for such a special occasion.”

Philomena Murray, aged 13, said: “I’ve grown up in the church family and wanted to continue my journey with God helping me through life.”

Baptism is a sacramental rite, in which a person pledges their allegiance to God through Jesus Christ and rejects everything which is not of God. This baptism took place on July 15.
