The establishment of a “creative enterprise zone” has been listed as one of the top priorities for Bexley councillors.

Members of the places overview and scrutiny committee decided their priorities on Tuesday as the borough looks to deliver on its ambitious growth strategy.

Councillors were informed of the issues officers think will be the most important, including a scheme to develop a creative enterprise zone.

Council officer Toni Ainge said: “We are looking at creative opportunities across the borough including in Sidcup with the new cinema and library in development.

“We have a lot of cultural ambition. We have been shortlisted by the GLA to look at becoming a creative enterprise zone. That’s an exciting opportunity to see how we can make creative enterprises thrive. That brings with it business growth.”

The CEZ is one of Mayor Sadiq Khan’s initiatives that will end with one borough winning £50,000 to develop their plans.

According to City Hall: “This groundbreaking new initiative, one of Sadiq’s key manifesto priorities, will help creatives put down roots, establish themselves in local areas, attract new artists and creative businesses, and develop skills in local people.”

Cllr Melvin Seymour said: “I’m really keen on the cultural programme, and particularly to see a creative enterprise zone. I think that is very innovative and exciting.”

The officer said the borough has been shortlisted against nine other councils, and that two awards will be made.

Ms Ainge said: “Regardless of whether we are selected or not, we could look at what makes a good creative enterprise zone, what are the things that will attract people to the borough for creative making.”

The announcement is expected in October.
