A scheme to build a new air-dome on Green Belt land is set to be given the go ahead by Bexley Councillors.

David Lloyd in Sidcup wants to build an inflatable dome on top of protected green space.

The gym said in its planning application that the proposals would encourage more people to play tennis all year round.

A petition backing the development was supported by more than 700 people.

Councillors on Thursday night are expected to give the plans the rubber stamp, referring the project to the Secretary of State for the final say.

Planning experts at the council say that it is an inappropriate use of “green belt” land – space that should only be developed under special circumstances.

Officers said in their report: “However, it is considered that the seasonal nature of the proposal; its limited effect on views; and, the social benefits that arise from enhanced community and school use amount to very special circumstances which outweigh the harm to the Green Belt and justify the grant of planning permission.”

If the plans are approved, David Lloyd will erect a inflatable tennis air dome directly over three of the existing courts.

In support of the application, residents said it is a “badly needed facility” which will boost health and fitness during winter.

The application said: “There is currently a strong need for indoor facilities, both locally and nationally to provide indoor facilities that allow players the opportunities to play all year round and improve grassroots participation, which is currently being hampered.”
