Pupils from Wandsworth Prep School rose to the challenge set for their Innovation Challenge 2018.

For the past few years, John Lewis has run the initiative to encourage children aged nine to 11 to think creatively.

This year, the focus was on sustainability and the lasting impact of our actions on the planet, matching the school’s eco-friendly focus.

Wandsworth Prep School, on Allfarthing Lane was sent three old blazers which they had to up-cycle in order to create something new and sustainable.

In their year groups, year four, five and six designed and made a variety of musical instruments, a set of jewellery boxes and a bespoke dog bed using only the blazers sent and items out of the recycling bin.

Max Anderson, a year six pupil at Wandsworth Prep, said: “The challenge was really inspiring and interesting. It helped us learn about tackling the whole innovation process and how to deal with difficulties along the way.”

The deadline for entry was Friday, May 25 and the blazers were judged on Monday, May 28.

Unfortunately, Wandsworth Prep School didn’t make the final shortlist however the experience provided insight into the importance of sustainability and gave the children the chance to develop their teamwork and creativity skills.

Miss Amy Sutton, year four teacher who oversaw the children take on the challenge, said: “The John Lewis Innovation Challenge was a fantastic opportunity for the Upper School to show great teamwork, innovation and design skills.I was very impressed with the children’s imagination and collaboration skills. It was a big task to take on but each year group rose to the challenge.”
