If you noticed something a little different at the town hall last week, then you aren't the only one.

To mark the UK’s inaugural Windrush Day, a unique flag was flown above the hall on June 22.

The day marked 70 years since the ship Empire Windrush arrived at Tilbury Docks in 1948 carrying amongst its passengers 492 citizens from the Caribbean. These passengers blazed a trail for thousands more, who would travel from across what was then the British empire.

Leader of the council, Tony Newman was pleased to see Croydon celebrate the special occasion.

“The Windrush generation came to Britain to help the country rebuild after the war," he said.

"Their contribution to almost every aspect of our national life has been incalculable, and it is right we should celebrate that.”
