The first image has emerged showing the aftermath of a house fire in Thamesmead.

The image shows the blackened wall of one of the houses, most likely the house at the property where the fire started.

As of 2.30pm London Fire Brigade has yet to confirm the cause of the fire, which was first reported at around 10.30 am this morning (June 23) by Marshall Path.

Unconfirmed reports from witnesses suggest the fire may have been caused by a barbeque or exploding gas bottle.

12 residents are confirmed to have safely escaped the fire, taking refuge in a nearby youth centre.

It is believed London Ambulance Service also attended the scene, but there has been no confirmation of any injuries.

In a statement released shortly before 2pm, a London Fire Brigade spokesman commented: “Eight fire engines and 58 firefighters and officers were called to a fire at a row of terraced houses in Marshall Path, Thamesmead.

“Three houses are currently alight. Twelve people left the properties before the arrival of the Brigade and a local youth club opened to look after them.

“Three gas cylinders were involved in the fire. They were cooled and removed as some cylinders can explode when exposed to heat.

“The Brigade was called at 1033 and fire from Plumstead, Erith, Bexley, and surrounding fire stations are attending the incident.

“The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.”
