A sex shop in South Croydon will have its licence considered at a meeting next week.

Private Shop in Selsdon Road has applied to renew its Sex Establishment Licence.

The licence holder is Essex-based company Darker Enterprises Limited and the sex shop licence was first granted in 2005. It has to be renewed every year.

The application is for the shop to open from 10am-6.30pm daily and until 8pm on Friday and 6pm on Saturdays.

One of the conditions is that the entrance to the shop should be obscured so the inside can’t be seen by passers-by.

There has been one objection to the application from a nearby resident who said: “Far from being a benefit to the town and community, I believe such a business would be harmful to both, given the current moral decline and its effects on public decency and community life.

“This town is labelled one of the worst in Great Britain. If this proposal was accepted, we would be sliding even deeper into the mire.”

The objector added that the shop should go because it is passed by schoolchildren and churchgoers.

The licence allows the shop to sell ‘sex articles’ which is defined as ‘anything made for use in connection with, or for the purpose of stimulating or encouraging sexual activity’.

A condition of the licence is that no video can be shown in the premises.

The licence conditions add: “The licensee shall ensure that no part of the premises shall be used by prostitutes, male or female, for soliciting or any other immoral purpose.”

The application is due to be discussed by Croydon Council’s Licensing Committee on Wednesday, June 27.

The meeting will take place at Croydon Town Hall from 6.30pm.
