Residents along a dangerous road in Woolwich are desperate for the council to make it safer in any way.

John Wilson Street, heading down towards Woolwich Pier, has been the site of many crashes both minor and major.

Only a few days ago, on May 15, six people had to be taken to hospital by London Ambulanceafter two cars crashed into each other on the street.

On February 15 earlier this year a motorcyclist died after a crash with a lorry on the same stretch of road.

That fatal crash was the final straw for residents, who handed in 886 hand-written signatures as a petition to Greenwich Council in March.

Vicky Falconer went around door to door to see if people wanted to sign it and said almost everyone she talked to said they hated the road due to all the accidents.

She told News Shopper: “There has been an awful lot of accidents recently. People around here who use that road every day say living next to it makes their life unpleasant.

“It has a 30mph speed limited but it doesn’t get used like that at all.

“We spoke to some of the people who live near to the junction and they said they have to rebuild that barrier loads of times.”

The petition and possible improvements to the road will be discussed at a meeting of the Highways Team at the council on June 6, and Ms Falconer said the council had been very supportive so far but need to make that road safer.

“Almost everyone we spoke to said they hate that road. There is not enough attention paid to making it safe”, she said.
